Day 1: Santa Marta. Arrive at any time and meet the rest of your group. No activities are planned for today, so depending on the time you arrive you can head out and explore Santa Marta for yourself.

Day 2: Santa Marta/Wiwa Camp. Travel to Machete Pelao. The trek begins through farmland in the river valley of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. You’ll hike a combination of uphill and flat terrains and arrive at your first campsite this afternoon.

Day 3: Wiwa Camp/TeyunaParaiso Camp. The trek continues along the river, following a steep incline towards the source. If you get hot along the way, jump in the river to cool down! After navigating your way around some narrow ledges, you’ll arrive at camp mid-afternoon.

Day 4: TeyunaParaiso Camp/Wiwa Camp. You’re just an hour away from the Lost City, but first you must conquer the 1,200 steps built by ancient Tayrona people. The gorgeous views of the surrounding Sierra Nevada Mountains are well worth the effort. Learn about this incredible historical site from your guide. Return to camp for a swim and a bit of lunch, then begin the return trek.

Day 5: Wiwa Camp/Ricardito Camp. Follow the path through small Kogi villages dotted amongst the deep jungle as you head to Ricardito Camp. Enjoy the sunset on your arrival and admire the beautiful views.

Day 6: Santa Marta. Trek back towards Santa Marta through the incredible scenery and enjoy your final hours in this amazing area before returning to Santa Marta for a night in a hotel.

Day 7: Santa Marta. Trip ends. Depart at any time.

Accommodation

6 nights’ accommodation are included on this trip. 4 nights will be spent camping in hammocks/rustic bunks. 2 nights will be in hotels.

We recommend bringing a sleeping sheet rather than a sleeping bag, as the temperatures in Colombia, even at night can be quite hot.

Meals

Most of your meals are included on this tour with 6 breakfasts, 5 lunches and 4 dinners provided during your trek. Outside of this, you’re free to choose your own food from the numerous diners and restaurants in Colombia.

The minimum age to join this trek is 18. This fantastic trip is an open-aged experience that caters for a mix of younger and older travellers. This means that you may travel with people who are outside your own age group. Such a mix of ages creates a great group dynamic and enhances the travel experience, as you get to know a range of people with different stories to tell!

British citizens can enter Colombia for up to 90 days without a visa. You may need to provide proof of onward travel. Your passport must be valid for a minimum of 6 months from your date of arrival in Colombia. Visa rules and regulations are subject to change. Please check the relevant embassy websites for the most up to date visa information.

A note about trekking

The Lost City trek is a challenging hike and should only be attempted by those who are confident in their physical fitness. You will be trekking for 4-6 hours each day, journeying through hot jungles and around some narrow ledges, which might be challenging for anyone who is not steady on their feet. In the dry season (December – March) the route can be dry and dusty. In the wet season (April – November), the route can be muddy and slippery.

You will need to carry your own luggage, so we recommend only bringing what you need: a few changes of clothes are more than enough. Please bring insect repellent as mosquitos can be a nuisance in the jungle. There are a number of river crossings on the route. During the wet season the river can come up as high as your waist, so you may need to carry your bag above your head to keep it dry.

Physical Rating: Demanding. Some activities on this trip will require a good level of fitness.
